Some 300 San Diego Unified high school students learn about STEAM career experiences from five innovators who present new technologies including electric cars, satellites that provide internet connections to airplanes and other moving vehicles, an algae-fueled Baja 1000 motorcycle, and state-of-the art bicycles.

Experts from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, NOAA and UC San Diego capture the imaginations of high school students interested in green technology as they demonstrate how their research helps to protect and preserve the ocean. Ralph Keeling and Stephen Mayfield keynote on CO2 emissions and algae biotechnology, followed by Chef Rob Ruiz, Noelle Bowlin of NOAA and Jessica Blanton of Scripps on their careers in studying and serving sustainable fish.

Heartily dismissing negative stereotypes of scientists, biotech entrepreneur Tina Nova and Salk Institute professor Janelle Ayres rocked an auditorium full of high school girls with stories of how hard work and confidence led to their joyful lives and satisfying careers in science. Following these two keynotes, Ayres joined Salk senior scientist Carol Marchetto and Natalie Calatayud and Kaitlin Croyle of the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research as they each shared their own paths to success. This event was part of the STEAM Leadership Series, presented by Intellectual Capital, Kids Eco Club and the Education Synergy Alliance.

Reef co-founder Fernando Aguerre urges high school students to follow their hearts as he recounts how his love for surfing and his desire to live near his brother in California led him to leave Argentina and build a hugely successful career as a surf brand entrepreneur. Then, he recalls, with plenty of money but little time for a personal lives, the brothers sold the business, allowing Fernando to pursue his passion for spreading surfing around the world as president of the International Surfing Association. "It's not taking pilots out of planes. It's putting propellers on smart phones." So says Chris Anderson, co-founder of 3D Robotics describing "Solo," the world's first Smart Drone. Anderson was among a group of leading engineers in unmanned aerial vehicles gathered on the USS Midway to inspire San Diego students to consider careers in high technology. Others on board included Mike Atwood and Darren Moe of General Atomics describing the military missions of the "Predator" UAV, George Guerre of Northrop Grumman adding how its "Global Hawk" drone is also used for weather surveillance and other humanitarian purposes and finally, Mike Veale of San Diego Zoo Safari Park touched many in the audience by explaining how he plans to use drones to stop the poaching of rhinos and elephants in Africa.
