Social Justice and Harmony in China: Trade Union Movement

7/11/2005; 58 minutes

Han Dongfang, a railway electrician, has been described as China's Lech Walesa. He organized Communist China's first independent labor union in 1989. After a series of arrests and overcoming tuberculosis, Han took up residence in Hong Kong, where, since 1997, he has hosted an influential weekly program on Radio Free Asia that reaches an estimated 40 million people on the mainland. Presented by the Center for Chinese Studies, the Asia Institute, and the UCLA International Institute. (#11006)
