Everybody Hurts: How We Understand and Treat Pain and Addiction
While many of us experience pain, there can be significant challenges to its diagnosis and treatment given the interplay of environment, genetics, psychology, and cognition on how pain is perceived. Complex factors have led to an opioid "epidemic," with more deaths in the US from drug overdose than from HIV, car crashes or gun violence. Roughly, 40% of opioid overdose deaths involve a prescription opioid. In this series, experts in pain and addiction management will explore the patient, provider, health system, and cultural barriers to providing appropriate pain relief, approaches to avoid opiate addiction, and treatments for addiction when it does occur.
