About Dr. Philip Blanco

Dr. Philip Blanco is a lecturer in Astronomy and Physics at Grossmont College and San Diego coordinator for the Project ASTRO school outreach program. He credits his father's explosive backyard chemistry experiments and his early memories of the Apollo moon landings as the start of his interest in science and space.

Dr. Blanco gained his PhD in Astronomy from the University of Edinburgh in 1991. He then came to the US to continue his research on active galaxies. From 1994-1999 Dr. Blanco worked with a team at UC San Diego to provide mission operations support for an instrument on board a NASA X-ray astronomy satellite - an instrument which is still working today. Shortly thereafter, he moved into a college teaching career to share his enthusiasm for physics and astronomy with the public.
