As many as 30% of women have fibroids, benign (non-cancerous) growths that develop within the uterus. Most women with fibroids have no symptoms and need no treatment. However, when fibroids, cause heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic discomfort and frequent urination, women should seek medical attention. A variety of treatment options exist. Dr. Alison Jacoby reviews fibroids, their causes and how they are diagnosed. She also discusses fibroid treatment options, including laparoscopic myomectomy and hysterectomy, uterine artery embolization (UAE) and MR-guided focused ultrasound surgery. (#20042)
